It is in those moments that we get an inkling of what it might feel like to live in the future \u2013 and how we might navigate the urban sprawl.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>After our explorations of future environments \u2013 in terms of efficient and organized living\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/betterymagazine.com\/stories\/arcologies-science-fiction-in-the-city-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\">arcologies<\/a>\u00a0or architectural approaches\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/betterymagazine.com\/stories\/growing-skyscrapers\/\" target=\"_blank\">(growing skyscrapers)<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 our next feature focuses on possible sci-fi inspirations for novel transportation concepts. And while the most obvious mode that springs to mind, direct transport via\u00a0<i>Star Trek<\/i>-style \u201cbeaming,\u201d is bound to remain in the fictional realm for some time to come, we would like to explore some more immediately \u201cfeasible\u201d solutions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the most prevalent science fiction ideas is the obsolescence of automobiles \u2013 and their replacement by flying personal carriers, usually small jets or helicopters. As early as 1934, when\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arthur_C._Clarke\" target=\"_blank\">Arthur C. Clarke<\/a>\u00a0(author of<i>2001: A Space Odyssey<\/i>) published his short story\u00a0<i>Twilight<\/i>, personal transport took to the air.
